Tips For Parents

Here are some suggestions to help your child become a more proficient writer and reader:
  1. Ask your child to read his or her stories aloud to you. This simple task will boost reading fluency and confidence.
  2. Provide a personal snapshot (on a family vacation, or playing a favorite sport perhaps). Suggest that your child write about it.
  3. Organize a family story time around the dinner table. Each family member could bring a paragraph to read aloud.
  4. Play the “story game,” in which one person starts the story with one sentence, then the next adds a sentence, and on and on.
  5. Write short (very short is just fine!) stories about your life. What were you like when you were your child’s age? What was your life like?
  6. Write the story of the day your child was born.
  7. Play the Q and A game. Write questions. Have your child write the answers back to you. This is a great way to spend quality time!
