Here are some suggestions to help your child become a more proficient writer and reader:
- Ask your child to read his or her stories aloud to you. This simple task will boost reading fluency and confidence.
- Provide a personal snapshot (on a family vacation, or playing a favorite sport perhaps). Suggest that your child write about it.
- Organize a family story time around the dinner table. Each family member could bring a paragraph to read aloud.
- Play the “story game,” in which one person starts the story with one sentence, then the next adds a sentence, and on and on.
- Write short (very short is just fine!) stories about your life. What were you like when you were your child’s age? What was your life like?
- Write the story of the day your child was born.
- Play the Q and A game. Write questions. Have your child write the answers back to you. This is a great way to spend quality time!
